How it works
Character counts use Unicode code points, and the no-whitespace count removes all whitespace first. A word token is a contiguous run of Unicode letters or numbers, lines are split on line breaks, and reading minutes = word tokens ÷ 220.
Worked example
Example: paste 1,200 space-separated English words to see about 5.5 minutes together with character, word-token, and line counts.
Limits and data handling
A continuous CJK passage without spaces can count as one word token, so the reading-time estimate can be far too low. The UI does not show sentence count and does not assess difficulty, speaking pace, or layout.
Text and statistics are processed only in the current browser. They are not sent to the GoGo Tools backend or stored by the site, and analytics events do not contain text or results.

The fixed estimate uses 220 word groups per minute. It does not provide speaking time, paragraph totals or manuscript-page counts; unseparated text can substantially underestimate reading time.
Characters include whitespace and line breaks; the without-whitespace count excludes both. Check the recipient’s counting rules before submitting text.
