How it works

The backend removes nondigits and sends only an 8-to-14-digit result to Open Food Facts. Results are cached in backend memory by barcode for 86,400 seconds. The UI shows name, brand, quantity, Nutri-Score, allergens, and four per-100 g nutrition values.

Limits and data handling

Open Food Facts is community data and can be stale, incomplete, or different from the current package, so it cannot guarantee allergen or nutrition accuracy. The browser request times out after 20 seconds, and one client is limited to 25 Open Food Facts queries per 60 seconds. Missing products, rate limits, or provider failures return no result or an error.

The barcode is sent to the GoGo Tools backend and Open Food Facts and can remain in a barcode-keyed in-memory cache for up to 86,400 seconds. GoGo Tools does not build personal lookup history. Analytics may record the tool identifier, category, and locale, but not the barcode or result.

1. GS1 GTIN Architecture: EAN-13 and UPC-A Standard

Global commercial supply chains rely on GS1 Global Trade Item Numbers (GTINs). The dominant formats are the 13-digit GTIN-13 (EAN-13 / JAN) and North America's 12-digit UPC-A.

An EAN-13 sequence consists of a GS1 Country Prefix (e.g., 000-139 USA/Canada, 471 Taiwan, 450-499 Japan, 880 South Korea), followed by the Company Prefix, Item Reference number, and terminal Check Digit.

2. The Modulo 10 Check Digit Algorithm

Barcode scanners detect reading errors using the standardized Modulo 10 weighting formula: Alternate positions are multiplied by 1 and 3, summed, and subtracted from the nearest multiple of 10. If the computed digit mismatches the printed check digit, the scan is rejected.

3. GS1 Prefix vs. Country of Origin Disambiguation

A common consumer misconception equates the GS1 prefix with physical manufacturing origin. The prefix designates the national GS1 Member Organization where the brand licensee registered, not the geographical factory location.

4. Open Product Registries and Data Verification

The lookup engine queries open global repositories (such as Open Food Facts and GEPIR directories) to resolve product names, nutrition metrics, and manufacturer metadata.
